In the weeks since our arrival in Greenland on March 28, we have completed the initial phase of the expedition, which involved organizing and preparing the Windsled equipment in Narsaq. Our primary focus, however, has been on exploring and establishing a land route to the ice cap to transport our heavy load of over 3 tonnes, a feat never attempted in this area before.
We successfully found the route and transported the equipment to the base camp on a Nunatak in the ice. This involved sailing from Narsaq to the sea ice in Qaleralik fjord, lifting cargo through a 20m wall of ice, and using snowmobiles to transport it to the Nunatak base camp at 400m altitude.
The current team consists of Joorut Knudsen and Jensjacob Simonsen from South Greenland, and Juanma Sotillos and Miguel Angel Vidal. Only Jens Jacob will be part of the Windsled team.
We have begun supplying part of the cargo to the plateau up to 2000m and establishing a crevasse-free track. These tasks have been completed, and we are now making final preparations to transport the remaining cargo to the starting position of the Windsled expedition at 2500m altitude.
The decision to open a surface trail to the ice cap from Narsaq was due to uncertainties with helicopter resupplying, which could result in weeks of delays and frequent poor visibility. Surface resupplying is possible even in bad weather conditions.
During this time, we have also been testing some electric motorized systems with solar self-charging capabilities to explore the option of electrifying the access to the high plateau in the near future.
Tomorrow, we will begin the final resupply of cargo to the final starting position at 2500m altitude. If all goes as planned, we will then spend a few days exploring the southeast ice cap plateau, where the effects of warming are severely felt. This area is experiencing the emergence of dozens of new lands and Nunataks, which is unique to this region. We aim to photograph and identify as much new land as possible, as it remains surprisingly unexplored by surface exploration. Afterward, we will return to the Nunatak base camp and Narsaq to reunite with the rest of the Windsled team.
